Tips For A Successful Polygraph Test During Your Intelligence Job Interview

by Oscar Marshall

If you're eager to work in the intelligence field as an analyst, you'll need to go through a lengthy hiring process so that the agency can ensure it's hiring the right candidate. Phone interviews, in-person conversations, and a follow-up with each of your listed references are all part of the typical hiring process if you're applying for intelligence analyst jobs. It's common to face a polygraph test during one of the later stages of the hiring process. If you reach the polygraph, the good news is that you've made it this far. Now, it's time to get through this step successfully and be even closer to landing your job. Here are some tips.

Don't Look For Tricks

The internet is loaded with tricks on how people can beat polygraph exams, and this may compel you to brush up on these methods and attempt to employ them during your polygraph. A common suggestion is to place a tack inside your shoe that you can step on to cause pain and alter your body's vital signs. You should definitely stay away from such shortcuts. Not only do many of these online ideas not work, but if the interviewer were to suspect that you're trying to trick the test — and would likely ask you to remove your shoe to reveal the tack — you'd certainly not get the job.

Don't Worry About Perfect Answers

In a job interview, you typically want to provide the perfect answer to each question. In a polygraph exam for your intelligence analyst job, however, you simply need to focus on being honest. In a polygraph test, the questions are worded so that you need to simply say yes or no. Don't try to expand on an answer by saying, "Yes, but ...." Remember, the polygraph isn't designed to reveal your character; that has already been revealed during the interview process. Now, your interviewers are simply assessing whether you were honest earlier on.

Try To Stay Calm

It can be stressful to be hooked up to a polygraph machine; your mind may think of all the spy and police movies in which someone is given this test. In order to do your best, you'll need to stay calm, however. Try to breathe deeply and not think too much about the magnitude of the situation. Instead, just focus on listening to the interviewer's questions and answering in an honest fashion.
