Why It’s a Good Idea to Have In-Person CCW Training Even If Your State Allows It Online

by Oscar Marshall

People training to be armed guards need to have a number of skills and certifications, and getting a concealed-carry permit (CCW) is likely among them. States are divided on whether or not to allow online training for CCW; many don't, but some do. If you're in a state that allows online CCW training, it's still a good idea to find an in-person class instead. Yes, you do need to take COVID-19 protocols into account, so ask about distancing, masking, and so on. But if you can, get that in-person experience. It offers many benefits that online classes may not be able to give you.

You Can't Beat In-person Experience With Live-Fire Exercises

If you're training to be an armed security guard, you have to be aware of what it's like to fire a gun in a setting that may not give you a lot of notice, and that may present obstacles that make firing that gun even more dangerous than it already is. No matter how much you've gone hunting or gone to shooting ranges, those can't substitute for the circumstances that an armed guard has to face. And, your gun on the job will be very different from a hunting rifle. You need live, in-person practice.

It's Too Easy to Zone out During Online Classes From Home

Many people do very well with online classes, of course. But others find it easy to zone out or get distracted as they listen over headphones on the computer. If you're one of these people, you need to find an in-person class led by a licensed armed security trainer. When you're in a classroom, the focus for everyone is on the instructor and the course material. When you're at home, your focus is supposed to be on the instructor but can easily end up on your pet, kids, that bill you forgot to pay this morning, and so on.

It's Also Too Easy to Assume You're Doing Things Correctly After an Online Class

Unless you're an expert at firing the exact type of gun you'd have as an armed security guard, you've got to get practice with the model. After an online class, there isn't a lot of certainty that you'll know what you're doing. There are great online classes, to be clear. But if you landed in one of the not-so-great ones, you might not get the training you really need. An in-person class gives you a better chance of getting that training.
